Kevin Powell, Home Inspection Expert
My name is Kevin Powell and I am the owner of HAWK HOME INSPECTION SERVICES, INC.
In 2002, after years in the home remodeling business, I attended American Home Inspection Training Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I then received my Certification and my Illinois State License #450-0001682.
In order to maintain and renew a home inspection license, all home inspectors are required by the State of Illinois to receive six hours of continuing education per year.
In this and future editions, I will explain the home inspection process and answer any questions you may have.
The first question we need to answer is - What is a home inspection?
A home inspection is a totally objective visual examination of the physical structure of the building and its mechanical systems from the foundation to the roof including, but not limited to, the plumbing, heating and electrical systems.
The standards used in an inspection are well defined in the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics in the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the National Association of Home Inspectors (NAHI). While you are not required to belong to either of these organizations, these are the standards all inspectors should strive for.
We will take a closer look at each and every aspect of an inspection in the upcoming issues. Please feel free to contact me at k127pow@msn.com with any questions you may have about a present, or even a past, home inspection or to schedule a future inspection for your new home.
Tip of the Month: Remember to check your overhead garage door once a year. Check for loose bolts on all the hinges and brackets and tighten as necessary. If you use a door opener, be sure to check that mounting hardware also.
